Being an energy-conscious person, my home is well insulated and sealed, but I've heard that a house being too well "leak proof" might add to air quality problems. Is this true and if so what can I do about it?

While most people think that making your home “leak proof” can save you money on energy costs and make your heating and cooling system more efficient, it can have serious negative effects on your health.  When your house is unable to naturally bring in outside air through small holes and cracks, you circulate the same stale air throughout your home.  This means that any unpleasant odors from pets, cooking and other sources will linger longer.  It also means that pollutants that could be contaminating the air in your house, such as, formaldehyde, radon, smoke and VOC’s will stay trapped inside potentially causing illness.

An easy solution to this issue is to install an Aprilaire ventilation system.  This will bring fresh outside air into the home in a controlled method.  Ensuring that you have the fresh air you need to breathe easy and feel comfortable.  While there isn’t a one size fits all product, Aprilaire offers several options for a solution to almost every situation.  To learn more about Aprilaire that the ventilation products that they offer, follow this link: http://www.aprilaire.com/whole-house-products/whole-house-products/ventilation

I already have a filter on my furnace and replace it frequently. Isn't this enough protection for my home?

Most heating and cooling systems come with a one inch filter to provide some protection for the equipment. While this option might keep your furnace looking clean, they don't do much in the way of removing fine particles such as mold spores, pet dander and pollen. Standard one inch filters need to be changed frequently and are not designed to filter out those harmful pollutants. We offer a full line of products that can filter and remove the unwanted pollution in the air you breathe. There is a solution for every situation, so don't waste any time to schedule your free visit with a comfort adviser.

I don't have allergies so why should I invest in a whole-house air cleaner?

Even if you are not an allergy sufferer, you can still benefit from having a whole-house air cleaner. According to the EPA, indoor air is one of the top five risks to public health. Why? Because the air in your home contains pollutants such as pet dander, smoke, pollen, bacteria, and mold spores. Installing a whole-home air cleaner can remove these harmful contaminants, and ensure the air you breathe is clean and healthy.

My electricity/gas bills are too high. I'd like to save money on energy costs but don't want to sacrifice comfort.

One of the most popular ways to save money on energy costs in the winter is to install a heat pump. This offers great savings compared to using gas, or electric heat to keep your house comfortable. A heat pump operates on the same principle as an air conditioner, by collecting warm air from outside and releasing it inside the house. By doing this, most of the time you won't need to use your gas or electric heat until the outside air gets below 25 degrees.

If you are also wanting to save money in the summer, we offer air conditioning solutions that are two staged, and some units that are modulating. What this means is, instead of on or off, your air conditioner, or heat pump, can run at half of it capacity when only a small demand for heating or cooling is needed. With a modulating system, it is like a light on a dimmer switch. You always have just enough heating or cooling for the demand, from 35% to 100% of the systems capacity. Both of these options are great money and energy savers.

My walls are cluttered with separate control panels for temperature, humidification, ventilation, air cleaner and/or fan. It is unattractive and inconvenient, what can I do?

Cluttered walls are very unattractive and having so many controls to manage your comfort can be confusing and inconvenient. There are a several options available to streamline all of your comfort controls into one central location. These solutions can control things like humidification, dehumidification, air purification and of course, the temperature. Contact us today to find out the best solution for your situation.

Some rooms are too warm, others are too cool. What can I do to maintain a comfortable temperature while conserving money and energy?

When a house has an issue with "hot and cold spots" it is usually an air flow issue. One of the things to check first is the return air. Every room that has a vent for heating and cooling, needs to have a way for that air to be circulated back to the furnace. Some houses have a return vent in every room, while others have a central return vent in one location such as a hallway. If your home only has one central return, make sure that there is sufficient room under the doors for that air to circulate out of the room and back to the furnace. There are systems out there that have a variable speed blower that will direct just the right amount of air to all of the vents. The fan can be turned up or down for more or less air and can spin at a low speed when the system isn't running to provide constant and consistent air circulation. While this option is a great solution for many issues, it will only be as effective as the duct work will allow.

The air in my home is excessively dry. My family's skin is dry and we are experiencing static electricity shocks.

A very common problem in the winter time is static electricity. If you notice that your skin is excessively dry and you have a lot of static shocks, it most likely means the air in your house is too dry. A simple solution to this issue is to install a whole home humidifier. This will ensure that your home has the proper amount of moisture in it to keep wood furniture from drying and cracking, your skin moist, and keep those annoying static shocks at bay.
